... Make it Happen
What is
Home Automation?
You've heard about Smart Home or Smart House technology, but what is it all about?

Your home has systems, right now, that work independently.  They include:

Each system has it’s own controller or remote.  The systems typically do not talk to each other, or even care
what the other is up to.  That has been fine as long as everything works.  But what if you can integrate all of
your home systems, with one controller, or series of controllers strategically located in your home?

System Integration

The features and benefits of your subsystems  operate exactly like you are used to.  Home Automation
integrates all or some of your subsystems for added benefits and convenience.  Here are some popular
examples.

Alarm

Setting alarm to away mode triggers:

Lighting system to "all off"  If dark, front light on and lights set to random.

Heat down or AC up to predetermined setting.

Audio and Video equipment turned off.

Setting alarm to vacation mode triggers:

Lighting system to "all off".  If dark, front light on and lights set to random.

Heat down  to predetermined vacation setting.

Audio and Video equipment turned off.

AC off.

Water heater set to vacation mode.

Attic fan off.

Cut power to electronic appliances and audio equipment.

Fire Alarm Triggers:

Heat and Air conditioners turned off

All fans turned off

A/V systems turned off

All lights on for 7 minutes

Front lights set to blink

Doorbell

Doorbell triggers:

Audio system to lower volume and send chimes through speakers.

Telephone so you can speak to visitor.

Video camera at the door.

Outside and foyer lights

Practical application:

When someone rings the doorbell, the visitor’s picture comes up on the screen pads, and/or the
televisions through the PIP, as well as your PC monitor.  You can speak with him/her through any network
telephone in the house.

Optional features:

Open door from keypads or PC.

Get doorbell activity through Internet

Alarm Clock

Wakeup alarm triggers:

Any light fixture you choose.  You can set the dimmer setting.

Thermostat to adjust at wakeup.

Coffee maker, toaster, most any appliance that either has remote or can be activated by
powering up from outlet.

Audio system set to your favorite station or CD.

Open drapes

CNBC, Bloomberg, or your favorite news channel is displayed on screen pads.

Practical application:

Subsystems may have internal timers but if you sometimes get up at different times or your spouse may
wake up at a different time and have different preferences. Outside temperature and humidity is displayed on
screen pad so you can dress appropriately

Environmental Control

HVAC is centralized and controlled by screen pads and/or PC. System can be accessed via Internet and/or
telephone. Attic fans and (de)humidifiers are integrated as well. Outside temperature and humidity sensors
are integrated into system. Complex timers and macros can be used for efficiency.

Practical application:

Thermostats and humidistats do a good job keeping things even.  Remote control is obviously more
convenient but being able to access your system from anywhere offers limitless possibilities.  During long
vacations you can shut the AC down, call it from your cell phone and activate the system so it’s ready when
you arrive.

Lighting/Appliance Controls

All lights and appliances that have X-10, UPB  or RF based controller can be controlled through remote,
keypads, scene controllers and/or PC.  Macros can add a series of commands for versatility.   Lighting
fixtures and appliances can bet integrated with macros from other systems.  i.e. Doorbell triggers porch lights.

Practical applications:

Presets can be designed to set lightings scenes.

Motion detectors activate any chosen light, or chime.

Alarm activates all lights in the system, as well as all cameras.

Popular Macros:

Welcome Home - garage door opener activates outdoor lights and/or hall lights. Raise/lower HVAC.

Night Swim- button near back door turns on: pool filter/heater, pool lights, bug zapper, and
waterfall.

Good Night - one button in master bedroom can turn off all the lights in the basement/house as well
as downstairs TV.

Safety/Security:

Practical applications:

If your alarm is tripped, all of your lights flip on full and your cameras are rolling and recording.   The system
acts as a powerful deterrent, but if your home is broken into, you have a good picture for the police,
dramatically increasing your chances of retrieving your belongings.

It’s not just about burglars and bad guys.  Cameras can be set up to keep an eye on the kids in the pool or at
the jungle gym.

Infants can be monitored with cameras and the intercom feature in the phone system.

Motion detectors set up near pool help prevent accidental pool incidents by triggering chime, lights and
cameras.

Motion detectors set up at front path and driveway that trigger path lights and indoor chimes alerting you of
incoming guests.
